The work of the ARRS Program Group: Incorporating the EU Legal Terminology into the Slovenian Legal System

As part of an experts’ meeting with representatives of the Slovenian translation department at the EP and representatives of other institutions, the program's researcher presented the work of the program group, shared its key findings and highlighted the main challenges. Translators, who on a daily basis encounter the translation of legal terms in a way that inevitably requires an understanding of the conceptual background of individual legal institutes, are certainly an important addressee and potential user of the product in preparation, while the feedback received has been more than useful for the further work of the group and could significantly contribute to the possible upgrades of the program's work in the following periods.

Consultancy to the Slovenian translation department at the European Parliament Directorate-general for Translation

The establishment of a two-way communication channel for consultancy in emerging translation challenges provides European institutions' translators with access to ad hoc consultancy assistance by sectoral experts of the research program, especially in the event of complex legal terms. Such cooperation enables researchers of the program to get involved in the earliest phase of the process of incorporating the EU legal terminology into the Slovenian legal system - in the formulation and translation of legal texts of the European institutions into the Slovene language, which further upgrades the implementation of the program's concern for the proper use of the Slovenian legal language.

Law and (r)evolution 1920-2020: Past Experiences, Future Challenges

The title and the overarching theme of the international conference commemorating the centenary of the University of Ljubljana Faculty of Law are inspired by the Opening Lecture of the first Dean of the Faculty, Leonid Pitamic. In their papers presented at the conference, the speakers, distinguished domestic and international experts, addressed the various ways in which the law is challenged by disruptive new realities, from disruptive innovations of technologies or business practices to social changes or constitutional transformations, as well as the impact of globalisation and interdependence affecting the development of international, transnational and global law.

Social security coordination and non-standard forms of employment and self-employment

The contribution analyses the impact of atypical forms of work (employment and self-employment) on persons’ rights and obligations in the field of social security in cross-border situations. Social security systems are traditionally based on typical forms of work. Persons, who pursue their economic activity within the so called new forms of work (e.g. intermittent work on grounds of civil law contracts, economically dependent self-employed persons), might therefore enjoy a lower level of social protection. That could also be the case in situations with an international element (e.g. working in one, living in other Member State), making free movement of persons (workers) and their participation in the internal market difficult.

The expert report analyses, highlights the main features and offers an in-depth description of national pension and disability insurance legislation in Slovenia, with the aim of providing to the reader the prerequisites for a a compliance check of the national legislation with EU law.
