Challenges in processing of sodium potassium niobate based lead-free piezoelectric ceramics

The problems which limit the use of alkaline niobates in applications include a narrow sintering range and inability to control the microstructure. A dense, uniform and fine-grained microstructure is needed in various applications of lead-free ceramics. In the invited talk we discussed the influence of chemical modification on both sintering and microstructure, as the understanding of the mechanisms of chemical modification is the prerequisite for designing the functional properties.

Lead-free piezoelectric ceramics

In the plenary talk the state-of-the-art in the field of lead-free piezoelectrics was presented. Environmental problems, ralated to existing lead-based piezoelectric components, were explained, and the regulations in the EU which plan to restrict the use of toxic lead-based materials were discussed. The talk ended with the challenges in the research of lead-free piezoelectric ceramics.
