Identification of gifted students with underprivileged background during inquiry based learning of contemporary science topics

The lecture given during Slovenian conference of science teachers discussed a problem of identification of gifted students with underprivileged backgrounds, which usually have weaker literacy, math and artistic skills. The methodology of identification through inquiry based learning of contemporary science topics developed in the project was presented. Several questions demostrated that the lecture accessed teachers and that many of them realized hindering effects of missing intelectual skills for identification of giftedness.

Analogies in physics

Lecture presented analogy between propagation of microwaves through wood and light through anisotropic materials. As wood has a structure observable by naked eyes, absorption and propagation in dependence of orientation with respect to wood fibres, can be studied and extended to equal phenomena at the range of light wavelengths. This analogy is the content developed for the purpose of one o the teaching units.

Identification of gifted students with underprivileged background by doing experiments

Invited workshop was given at the annual meeting of physics teachers from Czech republik. The concept of identefication of gifted students with weaker intellectual skills was presented and one unit was tested from prespective of students during the workshop.

A pinch of hydrogels and liquid crystals in the soup of contemporary physics

The contribution introduces liquid crystals and hydrogels as new materials that improve people's lives and about which learners know little. Based on research on prior knowledge about liquid crystals and hydrogels, teaching modules with emphasis on basic properties of the mentioned materials and experimental work were designed. The modules are presented in the contribution. The results of the evaluation of teaching modules with the pre-service primary school students are added as well.
