Between silenced memories, meaningless heritage and broken traditions?

The contribution presents the consequences of the mass emigration (90%) of the Italian population (»istrian exodus«) and the repopulation of the Istrian towns by newcomers from Slovenia en other parts of Yugoslavia after WWII. The author discusses the concept of »interrupted histories«, the relations between the »old« and the »new« inhabitants, the old and the new identities, the perception of the spaces, the collective memories, the questions of cohabitation, heritage and tradition. This analysis sheds light on how memory appropriation and silencing processes reflect changing power relations.
