Microbiota in caves

Cave microbiology demands close cooperation among microbiology, geology and chemistry. Karst caves are excellent models to study various ecological interactions and processes. Microbial indicators offer a very useful piece of information for water supply management and water quality monitoring in karst. Particular attention should be given to study of show caves where external impact, reflecting in infrastructure, lighting, climate and alien biomass, might irreversible affect the integrity of cave ecosystem and its biota.

Pathogenic virus in water - Contributing to improve the biological safety of the Slovenian water bodies

The group at NIB actively participates in the yearly organized »Water days« (Vodni dnevi), where they present their last findings in the field of concentration/detection of viruses in water and the research of new tools for their inactivation. The event is organized by the Slovenian society for water protection and it is the best environment where to share new tools that can help to improve the safety of Slovenian water bodies in the future.
