Extreme-ultraviolet vortices from a free-electron laser

We have shown that it is possible to generate extreme ultraviolet vortices from a laser to free electrons. We used two methods: one based on the use of special optical lenses mounted at the output of the device, and one based on nonlinear harmonic emission.

Tunable orbital angular momentum in high-harmonic generation

We have shown that it is possible to generate extreme ultraviolet vortices using a light source from high-harmonic emission in a gas. For this, we used a special optical scheme based on the CITIUS light source (University of Nova Gorica, Slovenia).

Photoelectric effect with a twist

Is it possible to imprint coherently photon OAM on a matter wave, specifically on propagating electrons? This would indeed be a major breakthrough, strongly enhancing the quantity of information the electron would be able to carry about its parent environment, e.g., an atomic (molecular) system, or, more in general, a source of quantum data. Such an endeavor was generally considered extremely challenging due to the markedly different dispersion of photons and electrons. In addition, at ambient conditions, the center of symmetry of the erratically wandering atoms does not coincide with that of the photonic beam. In spite of these daunting premises, we have attempted this challenging task and reported the surprising fact that, even at ambient conditions, OAM of an optical photonic field can be imprinted coherently onto a propagating electron wave released from a Helium atom. Obtained results are reported in this paper.
