Social values on physical space and built environment : longitudinal research: 2004-2018

The public opinion survey focuses on the medium-term changes in opinions, positions and values of a representative sample of the Slovenian population regarding the use and perception of physical space, the trends of spatial mobility and environmental awareness. The survey is designed by the original questionnaire with a purpose for repeating the research at ten or fifteen year intervals. The database is listed in the Central National Archives of Social Science Data (ADP) and is available for analysis to institutional and individual users.

Developing social living labs through innovative urban education - The Case of UEL Project

Urban living labs have become a popular conceptual framework to emphasize the user-centred, open-innovation nature of research projects that are most commonly operating in a public-private environment. Regardless of the presence of user-centred research methods it is important to mention that urban living labs have originated from the technological and economic domain thus stressing the technological side of innovative solutions limited to an isolated territorial context. Seen from this perspective the paper elaborates the development of a more socially centred version of living lab, which bases on ‘social innovation’, greater civic involvement, takes into account the specifics of local context and engages stakeholders into co-creation of value in their community. The concept of social living lab will be explored on the case of project UEL (Urban Education Live) which tries to integrate four components of innovative educational approaches for more inclusive, vibrant and accessible urban communities.

De-constructing vulnerabilities along the Balkan corridor

The paper explores the heterogeneity and complexity of contemporary refugee movements in Europe by analysing in particular the situation along the so called “Balkan corridor”. Complex intersectionalities between gender, age, ethnic affiliation, and other aspects reflecting the situation of individuals on the move are addressed. Acknowledging that the corridor along the Balkan route enabled a more ‘efficient’’ transit of individuals on the move towards Western Europe, the vulnerability of migrants in specific micro contexts along the corridor is addressed within two main frameworks. Firstly, we question the ‘‘hard’’ and impassable European borders and their remilitarisation along the corridor. In the second part, we analyse intersectional vulnerabilities of particular refugees, particularly by examining the gendered implications of refugees on the Balkan route.
