KATRI: Anti-fouling and corrosion protection top-coat

At the 11th International Conference on Technology Transfer (ITTC), the international evaluation commission for Best Invention / Innovation with the commercial potential in 2018 has rewarded the contribution: KATRI: Anti-fouling and corrosion protection top-coat by Damir Hamulić, Peter Rodič, Dolores Zimerl and Ingrid Milošev from the Department of Physical and Organic Chemistry (K-3). The conference was held between 8 and 12 October at the IJS and was an excellent opportunity for research teams to present their scientific results, products or prototype as entrepreneurial ideas.

TiO2/SiO2 films for removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from indoor air

This review chapter in Handbook of Ecomaterials about the use of TiO2/SiO2 photocatalyst for air cleaning was prepared upon invitation from the editor B. Kharissov. An overview of the design and development of TiO2/SiO2 composite photocatalyst in the form of films with superior activity for removal of VOCs from the polluted air is presented.

Method for the cloves of garlic processing

In cooperation with spin-out company RGA Ltd. and the department F-4 Jožef Stefan Institute we reported an innovation about the modification of the clove of garlic by application of plasma to improbe hydrophilicity of the clove. Modification leads to faster germination and better development of the plant. Results are interesting and hence lead to protection of intelectual rights.

Determination of the degree of thermal modification of wood (project of the programme "Creative path to knowledge")

Thermally modified wood is becoming increasingly important building material. Owing to the lack of quality control methods, there are often cheaper substitutes on the market that do not meet the desired quality. Suitable and fast methods for the offline (after process) control for determination the quality of modified wood are thermogravimetry (TG) and dynamic vapor sorption (DVS). With the mentioned methods one can determine the resistance, dimensional stability and mechanical properties of thermally modified wood. In order to determine the correlation between the degree of modification and the measured parameters (the mass loss during modification was identified as a key indicator for the degree of wood modification), wood was modified at three different conditions (the Silvapro commercial process and two laboratory procedures; in the first case wood was wrapped in an aluminum foil that prevented access to oxygen and in the second one wood was modified in the dryer). Four different wood species were modified, which were, in cooperation with the industrial partner, identified as suitable for modification: spruce (Picea abies), beech (Fagus sylvatica), poplar (Populus sp.) and ash tree (Fraxinus excelsior). The wood was modified at four different temperatures ranging from 180 °C to 230 °C. Mass during modification was gravimetrically determined. Besides, mass loss during further heating in an inert atmosphere was determined, the amount of re-adsorbed moisture in an atmosphere with controlled humidity, a color according to the CIE L*a*b* system, the density and the envelope density, compression strength, the pH value, contact angle of water droplets on the surface; absorption of water and water vapor (DVS) was also monitored.
