Method for the cloves of garlic processing

In cooperation with spin-out company RGA Ltd. and the department F-4 Jožef Stefan Institute we reported an innovation about the modification of the clove of garlic by application of plasma to improbe hydrophilicity of the clove. Modification leads to faster germination and better development of the plant. Results are interesting and hence lead to protection of intelectual rights.

Activation of nitric acid in fluorinated alcohol for aromatic nitration and oxidation of alcohols

Activation of nitric acid with fluorinated alcohols (heksafluoro iso-propanol or trifluoro ethanol) enabled its use for selective and efficient nitration of aromatic compounds or aerobic oxidation of benzylic alcohols to benzaldehydes.

Teacher as a researcher in the field of teaching chemistry

Barbara Modec was a reviewer of the monograph titled »Teacher as a researcher in the field of teaching chemistry« which consists of eight original chapters that result from a collaboration between pre-graduate and graduate students and their university mentors. The published contributions present results of studies dealing with teaching and learning chemistry or chemical topics. The work is dedicated to the future and the currently active teachers of chemistry and natural sciences at all levels of pre-university education. It contains useful information on the didactics on chemistry, obtained in the Slovenian education system.

Transparent thin films with self-cleaning efficiency and improved durability prepared at low temperatures

At the 2nd International Conference on New Photocatalytic Materials for Environment, Energy and Sustainability (NPM-2, organized by Redox Technologies, Inc.), which took place in Ljubljana from 3rd to 6th of July 2017, Urška Lavrenčič Štangar held an invited lecture. She mostly presented results that were previously published in Catalysis Today journal ("Transparent titania-zirconia-silica thin films for self-cleaning and photocatalytic applications", see description above - last point under research achievements), together with some latest results of this type of coatings on polymeric substrates that were possible with this low-temperature synthesis.
