Abstract
The project is devoted to ordering, surface forces, structure & motion of defects and orientational fluctuations in confined liquid crystals. The experimental methods D-NMR, AFM, and STM will be adapted for the optimum sensitivity to the efects in the surface layer. Complementary theoretical approaches will be used to guide experiments and explain their results. Results will broaden the basic knowledge of confined liquid crystals and help to improve the use in electrooptical devices.
