Abstract
To monitor definite transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (Tees) in Europe, diagnostic confirmation and up-to-date typing of all human Tees is done via network of neuropath logical laboratories. To identify unrecognised disease forms possibly including variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (cud), atypical dementias and neurodegenerative disorders especially in the young are targeted forneuropathological examination. TSE tissues and body fluids will be provided as unique resource for research and validation of new diagnostic tests. The additional study of specific pathogenesis issues will help in devising public health, diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive strategies. This proposal builds one successful network and is complementary to other proposals for research on TSEs.Expected results represents a significant contribution to a European concerted effort in a field of important public health and socio-economic concerns.
