Significance for science
Our finding that SOCS3 has no influence on CXCR4 surface expression and function will add to identification of factors, which are involved in positioning of developmental stages of B cells into bone marrow niches and the mechanism of B cell egress into peripheral tissues. Our discovery that CB2 receptor facilitates egress of LY6Chi monocytes from bone marrow and that lack of CB2 results in a small accumulation of LY6Chi monocytes in bone marrow could add to the understanding of the mechanism of osteoporosis. Agonists of CB2 receptor could potentially prove interesting new leading compounds for prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. Furthermore, the mechanism of osteoclast formation or their precursors are yet unknown. Thus, our findings could add a piece of the puzzle for the final picture of bone pathophysiology.
Significance for the country
During the research project I collaborated with Yale University, where I did all of my experimental work. I was trained and used daily the top tools in immunology research: flow cytometers (LSR II, Stratedigm), fluorescent, confocal and two-photon microscope and I could work on animal knock-out models. This knowledge and skills will be transferred into Slovenian environment. Furthermore, the connections developed during my stay at Yale will open the possibility of further collaboration in the future.
