Significance for science
The most important achievement of this project, which can be published, is development of the method based on a pressure drop measurement, which enables determination of orientation and size of synthesized active groups. Method is derived on the fact, that active groups occupy certain space of the monolith pore volume, decreasing in this way pore diameter and monolith porosity. This correlation was found to be significant and enables determination of thickness down to 1 nanometer. Main application of the monoliths is in the field of biologic macromolecules, having size of few 10 nanometers, therefore active groups providing high binding capacity should be of the same order of magnitude. As such, the developed method gives very high accuracy. Another benefit of the method is that it can be applied also for determination of the layer thickness of adsorbed molecules under real conditions, what is practically impossible by any other method.
Another important contribution is related to derivation of correlation between structural and mechanical properties of chromatographic monoliths. This is new topic where no according to our best knowledge no publications exist, which is however crucial to understand monolith performance during their usage. Results represent also significant contribution in understanding of porous material mechanical properties.
Significance for the country
BIA Separations is a world leading producer of the monolithic chromatographic columns with a constantly increasing number of employees, recently moved into the new facility built in Ajdovščina. Results of the project provide to the company competitive advantage through the development the new products and improveed performance of the exsisting ones, resulting in increase of sales and thus generating new working places.
