Significance for science
The project is developing a computational framework for knowledge discovery from heterogeneous data and knowledge sources in biomedicine and bioinformatics. Data mining in bioinformatics has so far been concentrated on dealing with data coming from a single source. Due to wide availability of various types of biomedical data and information, the integration approaches are urgently required for further advancement of biomedicine and science in general. The proposed project aims to answer this need, and provides and will provides solutions in the form of new methods and their practical and openly available software implementations.
Within the project we are demonstrating the utility of the proposed approaches in two important biomedical applications. The reconstitution of the adiponectin homologous pathway in yeast will enable the reconstruction of the human pathway, which will open the possibilities for discovery and development of new drugs for type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Developed computational methods will help us to experimentally determine the cross-talk between cholesterol homeostasis and drug metabolism in human primary hepatocytes treated by statins. This will contribute to the detection of side effects of statins.
Significance for the country
The developed procedures within the project can significantly contribute to discovery in molecular biology and, by integrating publicly available data/knowledge sources, reduce costs of the genomic research. Slovenia is lacking applied projects in bioinformatics that bring together computational scientists and experimentalist, and we believe that this project is an example of a successful interdisciplinary development of this type in the area.
