Abstract
The main goals of the project are 1) to establish a hydrodynamic theory of active media and study the most relevant solutions of its equations, and 2) to suggest a blueprint of nanoactuators and nanomotors exploiting Casimir-van der Waals forces and torques on anisotropic and inhomogeneous media.
Significance for science
The modeling approach of bacterial growth in the spirit of active systems is unpreceded. It combines approaches normally used separately in liquid crystal dynamics, reaction-diffusion systems, and active gels.
The continuum description of long nematic polymers with defects and variable density is not existing in literature. It is essential to describe confined systems like packing of DNA inside viral capsides.
Our calculation of interaction between wide nanotubes as well as multilayer nanotubes are novel. Our method opens new ways of calculating van der Waals interactions between carbon nanotubes.
Significance for the country
The usual importance of national world-level science for Slovenia. In particular, keeping pace with world science and education of research and teaching profiles in the field of soft matter and modeling in general.
