Abstract
The project will examine the new forms of religious practices in urban Burkina Faso in the context of momentous social and political changes in Africa and in the world. Since Islam is the dominant religion in the area special attention will be paid to the multiplicity of new Islamic practices and increasing occurrence of atheism. As atheism is often perceived as a process of breaking of social ties between the individual and the community, local concepts of personhood, sociality and religious identity will be explored.
