Abstract
The 980 nm diode laser is a new technology in the field of medical lasers. Possibilities of its use in oculoplastic surgery are:
transcanalicular dacrycystorhynostomy;
endoscopic orbitotomy;
oculoplastic surgery;
Hypothesis:
to develop a method of laser DCR with the 980 nm diode laser yielding better succes rate than current transcanalicular laser DCR methods;
to develope a method of endoscopic laser orbitotomy with the 980 nm diode laser, which allows minimally invasive surgery of the orbit with a lower complication rate c/t classic orbitotomy;
to develop a method in laser oculoplastic surgery with the 980 nm diode laser combining the effects of controlled tissue removal as with the Er:YAG laser and the hemostatic properties of the CO2 laser.
The research project deals with the development of completely new surgical applications of the 980 nm diode laser in the fields of lacrimal, orbital and oculoplastic surgery. This opens the possibility of achievement of new scientific knowledge and development of clinical applications and boosting of industrial research of the 980 nm diode laser.
The results of the above mentioned studies potentially mean advancement in the field of ophthalmology, new and better treatment possibilities for patients, and international recognition of local medical research and industrial technology.
