Abstract
The incidence of pertussis decreased after the induction of vaccination. The whooping cough affects mostly infants who have not been vaccinated yet. Most probably, teenagers and adults represent the reservoir of Bordetella pertussis. The clinical picture of adult pertussis usually lacks typical characteristics of childhood disease and is therefore unrecognized. In our study, 3400 sera of different age group are going to be tested for Bordetella pertussis antibodies. The aim of the serosurvey is to recognize the frequency of infection in different age groups and the difference in antibody levels comparing vaccinated and unvaccinated population. Population-based study will include patients with long-lasting cough in whom detection of Bordetella pertussis nucleinic acids will be attempted from nasopharyngeal swabs. Acute Bordetella pertussis infection will be confirmed also serologically. Collected data will be the basis of possible changes in vaccination programme in our country.
