Abstract
Delta ferrite is part of the microstructure of two-phases stainless Fe-Cr-Ni cast alloys and austenitic stainless 18/8 welds. By a temperature below appr. 500 grades C coherent intermetallic particles precipitate from the solid solution in deltha ferrite, while below appr. 400 grades C its spinodal decomposition occurs. Both reactions produce internal elastic stresses, increase the hardness and strongly decrease the notch toughness of the cast alloy. The goal of this investigation is to establish the connection between the content and the distribution of delta ferrite in the cast alloy, to determine the kinetics of the spinodal decomposition at appr. 300 grades C and to determine its effect on notch toughness.
