Abstract
Landfilling continues to be the most common form of waste disposal in Slovenia, where leachate poses a number of environmental problems and can seriously contaminate surface waters and grounwaters. The need for efficient reclamation of landfill sites to avoid surface water and groundwater pollution is therefore widely recognized. Phytoremediation systems provide a cost effective, reliable, flexible, on-site technology for leachate treatment. Integrated water quality assessment methodology will be devised to monitor the ecological status of surface waters in accordance with the EU Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) which will be part of the phytoremediation system at the Ormož community landfill site for comunal waste. The system will satisfy requirements for sustainable rehabilitation of landfill sites.
