Abstract
Today one of the main tasks in surface engineering is to replace ecologically damaging wet electroplating processes by clean physical vapour deposition (PVD) processes. Low pressure plasma is the basic activation media in various PVD technologies. Surface processes during plasma assisted thin film growth as well as substrate cleaning strongly depend on the mass and energy distribution of species of reactants in plasma. The energy and mass analyser PPM 421 (Balzers) and Langmuir plasma probe will be used for plasma diagnostics in a BAI 730 (Balzers) ion plating system. The plasma parameters for deposition of various PVD coatings appropriate as replacement for ecologically unacceptable electrodeposited coatings will be optimized.
