Abstract
The BIG_PICTURE project support European, national, and regional government non-government organizations in biodiversity conservation by establishing extensive databases on animal species occurrences and their environment. The project's key objectives include addressing bottlenecks in human, technological, and analytical aspects and developing tools for integrating, analyzing, and utilizing data collected through camera traps. Due to the unstructured and fragmented nature of existing datasets, the potential of methods remains underutilized. The project connects experts, citizen scientists, and other stakeholders across Europe, with developed solutions also facilitating knowledge transfer beyond Europe.
Significance for science
The BIG_PICTURE project represents a significant advancement in biodiversity research by enabling systematic data collection and large-scale analysis using camera traps. Establishing structured databases will enhance monitoring of population dynamics, interspecies relationships, and human impacts on ecosystems. The development of advanced data processing tools, including artificial intelligence and optimized statistical methods, will allow scientists to model ecological patterns more accurately. Additionally, the project will contribute to the development of interdisciplinary approaches and strengthen international collaboration among scientific institutions.
Significance for the country
The BIG_PICTURE project will bring substantial benefits to Slovenia by improving the monitoring and management of natural resources and biodiversity conservation. The implementation of advanced data systems will enhance conservation strategies, crucial for sustainable forest and wildlife management. Participation of Slovenian research institutions in the project will increase international scientific recognition and strengthen collaboration among scientists, hunters, foresters, and other stakeholders. Furthermore, the project will foster the development of high-tech solutions and innovations, impacting Slovenia's environmental policies and economy while enabling knowledge transfer to the country.
