Abstract
The Woolshed Project addresses the underutilization of coarse wool in the Alpine region. Currently discarded, this valuable resource poses environmental issues and economic challenges. By transforming it into a commodity, the project aims to rejuvenate the wool industry, boosting innovation among small-scale businesses. The project's goal is to revolutionise the Alpine wool industry through research, design and smallscale affordable technologies. By fostering collaboration, preserving cultural heritage, and promoting innovative approaches, Woolshed contributes to the program's objective of enhancing research capacities and advancing sustainable development in the Alpine region. Envisaged outcomes: Increase the number of new and innovative wool products on the market: The project will support the development of new wool products that are more sustainable and marketable. Make wool processing more efficient and sustainable: The project will invest in new technologies that will make it more efficient and sustainable to process wool. Increase the use of wool in new sectors: The project will promote the use of wool in new sectors, such as construction, automotive, and packaging. Main beneficiaries: Wool Producers: Increased demand and Alpine-wide advocacy. Wool Processors: Sustainable, efficient processing methods.Innovators & Designers: Support for technological advancements via FabLabs, Textile Labs, etc. Woolshed unites partners from five Alpine countries, ensuring knowledge sharing, tailored solutions, and regional impact. The project pioneers coarse wool transformation, preserving heritage, fostering accessible innovations, and empowering local mountain communities. Woolshed not only develops technologies but also supports processors, promotes wool use, and reduces environmental impact. It embodies circular innovation, emphasizing community empowerment and sustainable practices.
