Abstract
Research in recent years has shown that the inhabitants of Idrija have persistently elevated mercury (Hg) levels, which may be expected to affect their health. We will study the influence of Hg on the activity of certain antioxidant enzymes in blood, on the concentration of selenium (Se) and on the binding of metallothionines. The results will be used to assess if the established degree of exposure to Hg is associated with a detectable biological response and represents a significant health risk for the population.
