Abstract
In Slovenia, the risk for birth of Down''s syndrom (DS) baby is increasing because of increasing age of parturients. From 1987 to 1996 211 ''''DS babies'''' were born. Only 38 DS babies were diagnosed antenatally. Besides it should be stressed that 72% DS babies are born to mothers younger than 35 years. A simple, cheap and reliable screening test is being sought for. The possibilities are: triple hormonal test from maternal serum around 16. week of pregnancy, measurement of nuchal translucency and biochemical screening test at the end of the first trimester. With noninvasive test it is possible to obtained fetal cells for trisomy 21 diagnosis early in pregnancy.
