Abstract
The medicinal leech is famous for its traditional medicinal use and its growing use in modern medicine. It is an endangered species in many European countries. The taxonomic status of morphological types is unclear. Using molecular methods, this study will address questions about (1) the phylogeny of the genus and related taxa, (2) the taxonomic differentiation and phylogeographic relations among populations, (3) the taxonomic (species) status of morphological forms, and (4) possible molecular identification tools for cryptic taxa.
